- Title
THE LAST GREAT MINING BOOM: THE CARNOTITE INDUSTRY IN WESTERN COLORADO, 1890-1985.
- Abstract
The article discusses the mining of radioactive carnotite ores on the Colorado Plateau, an industry which began in the late 19th century and ended in the late 20th century. A historical overview of this industry is presented. Initially, radium was mined. This was succeeded by vanadium mining, which was superseded in turn by uranium mining. Efforts to preserve archaeological sites associated with this industry are discussed, and the importance of ensuring that environmentally hazardous sites are safely shut down is noted.
