- Title
'The Fourth Estate' Commemorating the Duke of Wellington, 1814-1914.
- Authors
Howarth, David
- Abstract
In this article, the author chronicles the history of what he considers the wholesale failure of the British people to adequately commemorate the nation's greatest military hero, the Duke of Wellington. Focusing on the period between 1814 and 1914, the author argues that all attempts to commemorate Wellington in art became mired in controversy, with the exception of Wellington's tomb at Saint Paul's Cathedral by the sculptor Alfred Stevens.
