The article presents a survey on the African American population in the history of the downstate New York area since the Dutch settlement in the 17th century. Also cited are the entry of people of African descent as slaves in the Dutch colony of New Netherland under the control of the Dutch West Indian Co. in the 1600s, and the emergence of free African population in the area.
