- Abstract
In this article, the authors share their effort to create end-of-semester debate assignment that required tenth graders to play literary characters they had encountered in class readings. Topics discussed include aim to cast classroom as safe space for students to engage with political world; focus to explore literacy and critical thinking to challenging complex social and cultural values; and role of debates as catalyst for students to challenge characters' and political motivations.
