- Abstract
Introduction: Traumatic herniation of buccal fat pad in pediatric patients is very rare. Therefore, the clinical diagnosis and management presents dilemma before pediatric dentists. Buccal fat pads are anatomically seen between the masseter and buccinator muscles. The herniation into the oral cavity can result from a slight breach of the buccinator muscle in infants, also known as traumatic pseudolipoma. Case Report: A 2.5-year-old boy was brought up by his parents to the trauma center with the complaint of a protruding intraoral mass beside the tongue from the left side of cheek. There was a history of intraoral injury caused by a pencil. The parents reported 12 h post injury. Intraoral examination revealed a large, approximately 3 cm × 2 cm reddish yellow, soft, ovoid, pedunculated mass extending from a laceration of the left buccal mucosa at the level of occlusion of primary molars. This intraoral mass was nontender, smooth, homogeneous, and freely mobile on palpation. The provisional diagnosis of traumatic herniation of buccal fat of the pad was made. This case report presents the management of the same. Clinical Significance: There are sparse reports of traumatic herniation of the buccal fat pad of the oral cavity in the literature. Therefore, such case reports are valuable in the dental and medical field to provide insights into rare or unusual medical conditions along with their various management based on thorough examination of patients.
