- Abstract
The article suggests that juvenile literature can be used to encourage a sense of classroom community, which it claims is useful for academic achievement. The article discusses reading aloud in class, encouraging teachers to discuss emotions evoked by reading, and teaching respect for differences. The author recommends developmentally appropriate books for fourth through sixth graders such as "Locomotion" by Jacqueline Woodson and "Mr. Peabody's Apples" by Madonna.
