Abstract

The uniqueness of the figure of the Pope and of his possible resignation from the primatial office is observed in the perspective of the more frequent and regular resignations of diocesan bishops. Beyond the outward similarities and dissimilarities, the legal analysis of the “cause” of the resignation offers a fertile field of reflection. It helps to address other issues, including practical ones, such as the capacity of the office holder to resign and the form of the resignation.
