- Abstract
Electroencephalography findings in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder. Aim The role of functional brain pathology in the etiology of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is often determined by proton emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) and electroencephalography (EEC). EEC has important advantages including non-invasiveness, feasibility and cost effectiveness. The aim of this study was to compare EEC findings of OCD group with normal healthy controls and investigate the effects of some clinical and demographic factors in the OCD group on EEC findings. Methods: In this prospective study, 46 patients were diagnosed as OCD according to DSM-IV criteria in a psychiatry clinic between July 2003 and December 2003 were compared with forty-six normal healthy control who did not have any neurological or psychiatric disorders. Standard EEC recording was recorded only in the resting period without using any activation methods. Results: There was no significant difference between the patients and control group regarding sex and age (p>0.05). EEG abnormalities were found in 52.2% of OCD group and 13% of the control group (p<0.01). When all beta-waves were excluded, EEG abnormalities were found in 30.5% of OCD patients and 2.17% of the control group (p<0.01). The most common abnormal EEG findings found in the OCD group were slow, spike and sharp wave activities. These EEG findings were most commonly localized to left frontal and temporal lobe. Conclusion: The occurrence of EEG abnormality in one-third of OCD patients suggests the importance of functional brain anatomy in determining the etiology of OCD. Further detailed functional and electroencalpholographic studies are required for the evaluation of frontal and temporal lobe in OCD patients as most EEG abnormalities were located in those lobes.
