- Title
Reading Keats to the Letter: e.
- Authors
JONES, MARK
- Abstract
The article offers criticism of the poem "Ode on Melancholy" by John Keats. Particular focus is given to the role of the letter e in the poem. It is suggested that the letter serves as a visual pun due to its resemblance to the human eye. According to the author, Keat's use of the letter in line 20 of the poem undermines its meaning by suggesting that the objectifying gaze of the speaker and the reader is being returned. Other topics include iconicity and Keats' poems "Lamia" and "Endymion".
