- Abstract
This essay presents women's experiences of melancholy, depression, and other mental illnesses during the early 18th century. Particular focus is given to religious and sexual explanations for the causes of melancholy. Details on the depiction of women's mental and reproductive health in literature are presented. Contemporary beliefs on the humoral composition of the body are also discussed.
