Martin Chuzzlewit.
- Authors
Bennett, Rachel
- Abstract
The article discusses the book "Martin Chuzzlewit," by Sylvere Monod. It is clearly and modestly written, just in its presentation of differing critical views, scholarly in its survey of textual problems, thorough in placing the novel in its bibliographical, contemporary, and literary contexts, and discerning in its investigations into structure and language. It is addressed to the intelligent, but not necessarily knowledgeable reader and therefore covers some well-known ground, such as Dickens's early career, the effects of serial publication, and the details of the American controversy; but in all cases background is carefully related to foreground.
