- Title
The development of the heart and microcirculation: role of shear stress.
- Authors
Poelmann, Robert E.; Gittenberger-de Groot, Adriana C.; Hierck, Beerend P.
- Abstract
The article examines the influence of the blood flow and the ensuing shear stress in the changing geometry of the developing cardiovascular system. It discusses the transcription and growth factors that are important for the determination and specification of various components and segments of the cardiovascular system during embryogenesis. It also describes the geometrical changes during heart development as well as the changing hemodynamic results in cardiovascular malformations.
