- Title
The mystery of the dog in the night.
- Authors
Parker, Bruce R.
- Abstract
The article focuses on a story from the collection of "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes," where the great detective solved the mystery of the missing racehorse by correctly interpreting the absence of the expected reaction of a watchdog. Radiology trainees and non-radiologists find it easier to see a positive abnormality than to appreciate the importance of the absence of a normal structure. Absence of a sharp right heart border implies a right middle-lobe abnormality just as unsharpness of the pulmonary edema or absence of the femoral head ossification centers after 6-7 months of age may imply maturational retardation.
