On the Borders of the Page, on the Borders of Genre: Artificial Paratexts in Golden Age Detective Fiction.
- Authors
Effron, Malcah
- Abstract
The article explores the correlative stability between the boundaries of the page and of generic form and examines the footnote in fiction in Golden Age detective fiction. The role of genre in defining the boundaries between reality and fiction appreciation is emphasized in the works of pseudonymous detective novelists such as S. S. Van Dine, Carter Dickson and Edmund Crispin. The concept of footnote in fiction and artificial paratexts as well as aspects of reality effect are expounded.
