- Abstract
A case of epithelioid sarcoma of the thumb is reported and the problems of diagnosis and management considered. Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare tumour which was first recognized as a distinct entity by Enzinger in 1970. It is frequently mistaken by clinicians and pathologists for a variety of benign and malignant processes, especially chronic inflammatory disorders, synovial sarcoma and ulcerating squamous cell carcinoma. Young adults are mainly affected; the principal tumour sites are the fingers, hands and forearm. The tumour is often superficial, affecting dermis or subcutis.
