- Title
MONETARY OVERHANG: DO CENTRALLY PLANNED ECONOMIES HAVE EXCESSIVE MONEY STOCKS?
- Authors
Hsin Chang, Gene
- Abstract
The article investigates the issue of monetary overhang in centrally planned economies (CPEs). It compares the money stocks in CPEs with those in market economy counterparts. A chart is presented that lists the monetary overhang ratio of some countries in some selected years, including Indonesia, Turkey, and India. It explains the reason behind the increase of the monetary overhand in China during the price liberalization. The author argues that lack of monetary overhang does not automatically preclude a general shortage of forced savings.
