- Abstract
A literature search on epigenetics and periodontitis was conducted during the DG PARO master's course in periodontics and implant therapy. The results are discussed in this workshop essay, interesting studies are highlighted, and practical conclusions drawn. Epigenetics is defined as reversible chemical modifications of genetic sequences, leading to changed gene activity. This is mainly caused by DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNAs. Epigenetic modifications can be influenced by external and internal factors. These DNA modifications may frequently be passed on to descendants, possibly modulating periodontal disease during manifestation, progression, and remission. Because the field of epigenetics is relatively new, there are only a few fundamental studies. Errors in the research design led to controversial results or to data with little informative value. There is a great need for further investigations to evaluate the influence of epigenetics on periodontitis.
