- Abstract
Hospital sector is a key element of healthcare system. High expectations are set to the hospitals and rely on the provision of highly professional and vital medical services, which is why their resource and financial security should be a priority in national policies and interests. There has been a recent increase in scientific and political interest in hospitals, not only as health facilities, but also as a major socio-economic and manufacturing factor. Hospitals play an important role in reforming the national health system, respectively to the regional networks for medical assistance to the population in each country, including in our country. The aim of this study is to analyze in depth the financial results of the activities of the hospitals on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria for the period 2014-2018. Methodology of the study: The financial results of 19 hospitals - 4 university hospitals and 15 multidisciplinary and specialized hospitals - were analyzed. The survey was conducted in the period August 2018 - December 2019. The source of information for the analysis are the annual financial statements of the medical establishments, published in the Commercial Register and Non-Profit Legal Entities Register (NGOs). The analysis uses the most up-to-date published information. Microsoft Office Excel is used for graphic processing and visualization. Results and Discussion: A unified approach is used for analysis of revenue and expense, assets, equity and liabilities, as well as the reasons that led to their change in cash flows as a source of information for cash and cash equivalents, their movement and change. Indicators have been calculated and analyzed to determine the ability of companies to cover their short-term liabilities, to settle their financial obligations and invest in new fixed assets. As a result of the analysis, it was found that less than half of the examined establishments achieved a positive financial result for the indicated period, the highest being in 2014. Conclusion: Effective management of healthcare facilities is a serious challenge facing the management of each hospital. Despite the increase in budgets in recent years, hospitals are experiencing a serious shortage of financial resources, related both to the increase of their costs for the basic products and services, as well as to the possibilities for financial motivation of the employees. There is a lack of sufficient capital expenditure to enable them to be maintained and upgraded on a timely basis. Most hospitals do not have the resources they need to invest in new fixed assets.
