- Abstract
Background: legionnaires' disease continues to have a high incidence in Europe, requiring extreme control measures. Objective: this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of annual cleaning and disinfection treatments against Legionella in domestic water systems. Methods: a case-control study was conducted. The results of Legionella detected and enumeration were studied during the period between April 2019 and February 2021 from two groups of facilities in southeastern Spain, one without automatic disinfectant dispensers or particle filtration (group A) and the other with these two systems (group B). Results: statistically significant differences were only found only in the results of hot water samples. Thus, only in the group A facilities there was a significant increase in the number of positive samples for the bacteria between those shown at 3 and 12 months. In addition, the counts of group A are higher than those in group B in both sampling periods. Facilities B are more efficient in preventing the presence of the bacteria. Conclusions: the presence of automatic disinfectant dosing and particle filtration systems in the facilities markedly decreases the positive results in the water samples, controlling the destruction of the bacteria. Annual disinfection treatments are not effective during the period for which they are planned, and it is advisable to reserve their punctual application on the occasion of positive results.
