- Title
ECOWAS: Sanctions Lifted.
- Abstract
The West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, has announced that it is easing sanctions on Guinea, Mali, and Niger, which were imposed following military coups in those countries. The sanctions being lifted include financial and economic restrictions on Guinea, the lifting of restrictions on the recruitment of Malians to professional positions within ECOWAS institutions, and the lifting of a no-fly zone, border closures, and asset freezes in Niger on humanitarian grounds. However, political and individual sanctions remain in place. This move by ECOWAS indicates a desire to renew dialogue with military regimes within its membership, as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have expressed their intention to leave the bloc and have formed an alliance with Russia. In a separate development, the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC) has lifted sanctions on Gabon following a coup in August 2023, allowing Gabon to be reintegrated into the regional bloc.
