- Abstract
Introduction: Some nutrients present in the enteral diet can alter the effect of medications, causing harm to the treatment, losses in the bioavailability of the drug and a reduction in serum levels. Objective: to evaluate the knowledge of nursing professionals about the medication-enteral nutrition interaction in an intensive care unit, before and after educational intervention. Method: Comparative study, with a quantitative approach, of the before and after type, carried out in the general Intensive Care Unit of a University hospital in the State of Rio de Janeiro, between the months of February and September 2023. For data analysis, one point was assigned to the answers to the questionnaire and errors were assigned a score of zero, generating a sum for the pre-intervention and post-intervention periods, to evaluate the effects of the educational activity. Results: The participants' average knowledge score related to pre-intervention medication administration was 13 .07 points and postintervention 18.57 points; crushing medicines, 3.35 points and 4.54 points respectively; medication dilution, pre-intervention score of 3.38 points and post-intervention score of 4.69 points; administration of medication via enteral tube, 4.45 points pre-intervention and 5.69 points postintervention; interaction between medications and enteral nutrition, pre-intervention score of 1.88 points and post-intervention score of 3.64 points. This indicates that there was a significant improvement in participants' knowledge after the intervention. Conclusion: The research results demonstrated effectiveness in the educational action.
