- Abstract
The article reports on the study that connects the gap between the theory and practice of family therapy. A total of 262 case records of clients were examined to know the relationship between domestic violence and substance abuse. Domestic violence and substance abuse were used as the parameters because they can have catastrophic effects on the lives of individuals and families. Results showed that family problems are related to the behavior of the children and not to substance abuse or domestic violence. However, a statistically significant relationship between substance abuse and domestic abuse was found. Importance of routine assessment of drug and alcohol use and occurrence of domestic violence is emphasized. Collaboration between the empirical and clinical research is recommended.
