- Abstract
I present the progress made on an ethnographic project I am carrying out at a school in Mexico City, which has a large population of indigenous students. Neither students nor teachers ate aware of the diverse surroundings and no explicit attention is paid to children who speak indigenous languages, in spite of the postulates of the corresponding program. Based on the daily reality in the classroom and at the school, I attempt to respond to three basic questions: Is this school really intercultural? What ate its actors' attitudes regarding the multiculturalism present at school? What are the most outstanding language-centered educational problems? The results lead me to validate the study's underlying thesis: that an intercultural school at this location is still a utopia and that the social and educational consequences are serious.
