- Title
Dancing with and for the Dead: Site as Place.
- Authors
Otake, Eiko
- Abstract
Eiko Otake, a movement-based artist, discusses her approach to performance and the importance of site-specificity in her work. She emphasizes that her performances are acts she is responsible for, rather than products to be repeated. Otake explores various locations, such as churches and street plazas, and considers the unique characteristics and histories of each place. She believes that a place is not static and that it changes over time. Otake also reflects on her recent performances in cemeteries, where she contemplates death and the significance of remembering the dead. She concludes by discussing her ongoing work in the Green-Wood Cemetery and her upcoming project in the Historical Chapel.
