- Abstract
Andrés Jaque, an architect and the Dean of Columbia University GSAPP, shares his perspective on architecture in an interview. He believes that architecture goes beyond physical space and involves the integration of various forms of life and non-living entities. Jaque emphasizes that architects do not have complete control over buildings and must negotiate their agency with others. He discusses his projects, including one that examines the use of titanium coatings in corporate architecture and its impact on transnational politics. Jaque acknowledges the complexities of material politics but remains hopeful and committed to responsible practice. He also explores the connection between desire, politics, and architecture, suggesting that desire is central to politics and that architecture plays a role in shaping it. Jaque's performance piece, "Superpowers of 10," reenacts a film that explores the interconnectedness of the universe and the vulnerability of our communities. He also discusses his project "12 Actions to Make Peter Eisenman Transparent," which aimed to increase transparency in a construction site for the public. Jaque believes that architecture has the potential to empower individuals and shape cities and people's lives.
