So Far, So Close: The (Not So) Strange Biden-Meloni Friendship.
- Authors
Cristiani, Dario
- Abstract
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently visited Washington for discussions with President Biden, focusing on Italy's presidency of the G7. The two leaders emphasized their commitment to international law, multilateralism, and democracy, particularly in support of Ukraine. They also addressed global issues such as the conflict in Gaza, Africa's development, the Indo-Pacific region, migration challenges, and the impact of artificial intelligence. Despite their ideological differences, the relationship between Biden and Meloni has strengthened, building on the Joint Declaration signed during Meloni's previous visit. The article highlights the legacy of Meloni's predecessor, Mario Draghi, and the skepticism surrounding her right-wing party and controversial views. However, their partnership has been characterized by cooperation and a solid foundation in American-Italian relations.
