Secret Transmission in Kakure Kirishitan Families.

- Abstract
The Kakure Kirishitan culture in Takatsuki and Sendaiji, which I discussed in JMJ 75.3, was sheltered by a culture of secrecy even after the ban on Christianity had been lifted in 1873. It did not emerge until the 1920s, when individuals in the families began to speak publicly about their heritage, leading scholars to become increasingly interested in the possible early presence of Kakure Kirishitan practices in the two villages. In this essay I focus on the testimony of Fr Birrause and his devoted catechist, Peter Toda, and on that of the last three Kakure Kirishitan women in the area.
