- Authors
Gerhard, Jane
- Abstract
The article discusses the theories and artworks of feminist artist Judy Chicago. According to the author, the history of Chicago's classroom and studio in the 1970s illustrates shifts within the feminist movement away from confrontational activism towards a more mainstream and individualized mode of expression. Particular focus is given to the art installations "Womanhouse" and "The Dinner Party." Details on the feminist messages promoted and practiced by Chicago and her studio volunteers while making the installations, including consciousness raising (CR) and an emphasis on the individual, are presented. Other topics include the reception of the installations and relationships between Chicago and the volunteers.
