- Abstract
Wheelchairs are identified as a facilitator to full enjoyment of human rights. Wheelchair users who do not have access to appropriate wheelchair provision are at high risk of developing secondary health conditions and premature death. In 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Guidelines for the Provision of Manual Wheelchairs in Less-Resourced Settings. These guidelines are also useful in countries with higher income. The guidelines state the definition of appropriate wheelchair, address what should be taken into consideration while choosing an appropriate wheelchair, and outline eight service steps and the minimum standards that form the basis of a comprehensive wheelchair service. The field of outcome measurement for wheelchair outcomes is still in its infancy even though various assessment tools exist. In Slovenia the system for wheelchair provision mostly follows the WHO guidelines, but since its introduction there have been no formal changes, so we are facing some problems regarding technological improvements and newer views of the users and the professionals. The system is therefore calling for changes.
