- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the type of surgical repair techniques used in the treatment of inguinal hernia. We have gathered the datas from the Surgery Department of an Army Hospital, over a 5 -yer period. The data analysis consisted in the observation of the types of interventions used each year, and also a comparison with the general data from the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study is retrospective, single-center, of longitudinal type. We have evaluated all the surgical intervention for inguinal hernia repair, over a period of time between January 2009 - December 2013. The collected data were taken from the patient's clinical observation sheets and discharge notes. RESULTS: The total number of patients enroled in the study was 645. The types of interventions used changed over the years according with the evolution of guidelines about the inguinal hernia repair. There is a clear decrease in the number of tisular repair techniques. We can also observe an increase in the use of synthetic meshes. Open non-mesh-based techniques, once the mainstay treatment, are rarely used in current day practice. Since 2013 we started to use the laparoscopic techniques for inguinal hernia repair, both TEP and TAPP, with very good results concrening the length of hospital stay and the number of complications. CONCLUSION: The evolutions of techniques used in our Army Hospital is similar with the general trends in all the other medical institutions, based on the scientifi c knowledge over this topic. Our facility is capable to offer the best standard of care for army personnel, their families and also for civilian population.
