- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this survey is to clarify the clinical signifi cance of the prophylactic studies of lipid profi les in military personnel and the results to be used for assessing the risk of heart attacks, strokes and metabolic syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The survey is made during the annual check-ups and covers 754 servicemen and civilian employees of the army aged between 25 and 55 years. The persons examined are separated in three subgroups: 25 to 35 years, 35 to 45 years and 45 to 55 years. All of the participants are tested for cholesterol and triglycerides levels with colorimetric methods on OLYMPUS AU 400. The statistical processing is done by the methods of the variation analysis. RESULTS: In 78% of all tested individuals are found elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, levels above the normal range - 25,1% are in the group from 25 to 35 years,27,9% in the group from 35 to 45 years and 25% in the 45 to 55 years group. The average value of the measured cholesterol levels in the fi rst group is 6,07 mmol/l, in the group from 35 to 45 years - 6,24 mmol/l and in the 45 to 55 years group - 6,58 mmol/l. The triglyceride levels correlate to the elevated cholesterol levels in all of the tested groups. CONCLUSION: The analysis of the obtained results indicates a trend towards equalization of the high levels of lipids in all age groups. Disturbing fact is that there is a “rejuvenation” of the hypercholesterolemia in the fi rst age group.
