- Abstract
PURPOSE: To record and analyse the surgeries that took place in the ANH Operating Theatres Department from 2008 to 2012, in relation to the substantial Greek economic crisis and, therefore, the evaluation of the Operating Theatres Department throughout this specific time period. MATERIAL and METHODS: Data was obtained from the official surgery archives for the period 2008-2012, during which a total of 22,940 surgeries took place. The statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 20.0 and followed by a review of the international bibliography. RESULTS: During 2008-2012, the number of surgeries has been reduced by a 14.8% (5119 cases in 2008, 4358 cases in 2012), whereas the OR nurse staff reduction was 22%. The most affected specialties were the ones requiring the highest budget: ophthalmic surgery (-34.8%), orthopedics (-43%), thoracic surgery (-65.1%), and maxillofacial surgery (-98%, due to significant medical staff reduction following decommissions). Analogies: scheduled/ emergent operations 9/1, military patients/total patients 1/3. Intraoperative mortality was 0.017%. In addition, in the same period new types of specialized and time-consuming operations have developed (such as: HIPEC, endoscopic colectomy, shoulder arthroscopy, vitrectomy, GABG&AVR), resulting to the increase of the variety and the difficulty level of the surgeries. CONCLUSION‟s: Despite the economic crisis, the reduced national health funding and the general lack of resources in the Greek NHS Hospitals in general during this period (2008-2012), the ANH Operating Theatres Department has adopted a quality-based management strategy that led to the increase of the productivity indexes, the abilities and the multitasking skills of the staff. Also, the fact that the military staff family members and the civilians -despite their right to choose other NHS hospitals- continue to prefer being treated at the Athens Naval Hospital (ANH), shows that the quality of the health services provided and the efficiency of the ANH Operating Theatres Department‟s medical personnel remain at high levels.
