CROSS-LANGUAGE EQUIVALENCE AND CULTURAL SIMILARITY IN PROVERBS.
- Authors

- Abstract
This paper discusses issues of cultural similarities and equivalence of proverbs in six languages (Georgian, English, German, French, Russian and Turkish). The analysis is based on the pragma-semantic model of the proverb suggested by Rusieshvili (Rusieshvili, 2005) according to which the proverb's semantic structure consists of three interdependent and intertwined layers which make up a general meaning of the proverb. More specifically, the first layer presents the proverb's metaphorical form and meaning, the middle layer actualises the general meaning of the proverb with specific contextual parameters whereas the third layer ties the proverb up to the cultural background knowledge and the part of the linguistic model of the world the metaphor of the proverb refers to. Proverbs are compared and contrasted according to the general meaning expressed on the middle layer of their semantic structure. Semantic groups of proverbs comprising full and partial equivalents are also singled out.
