- Abstract
The article focuses on a study related to examining the long-term impact of agriculture on the tree community structure and composition, soil properties and light availability in various forests in Tompkins County, New York. The species and diameter of all trees were recorded. Light availability was measured by using hemispherical photographs of the forest canopy. It was found that soil water content and acidity were more variable in primary forests. Secondary forest soils contained 15% less organic matter and 16% less carbon than primary forest soils.
