COMMUNITY, CREDIT, AND THE PRODIGAL HUSBAND ON THE EARLY MODERN STAGE.
- Authors
PANEK, JENNIFER
- Abstract
The article presents literary criticism of the play "The Wise-Woman of Hogsdon" by Thomas Heywood and the anonymously authored plays "How a Man May Choose a Good Wife From a Bad" and "The London Prodigal". Particular focus is given to marriage's effect on men's relationships outside of their households as depicted in the texts. According to the author, the plays illustrate how gendered credit relations resulted in English men's sexual and economic connections becoming increasingly public.
