- Abstract
The article considers the picture Bible as a historiographical vehicle and material semantics of 19th-century scriptural illustration. Topics discussed are tradition and modernity as factors to the continuity of the Bible, indication of the diversity of images and significance of reproductive print media in several pages of the books of Samuel illustrated within the book "The Pictorial Bible," and wood engraving and steel engraving as reproduction of styles associated with print processes.
