- Abstract
The book "Corruption, Protection and Justice in Medieval Europe" by Jonathan R. Lyon examines the institution of the Vogtei in medieval Europe. The author argues that the Vögte were corrupt actors who used their power for their own benefit rather than for the well-being of those under their protection. Lyon compares the Vögte to mafia-like extortionists of protection money in modern societies. The book also discusses the emergence of the Vogtei, the role of the Vögte as enforcers of the law, and the criticism of their exploitation. A particular focus is placed on the murder of the Archbishop of Cologne, Engelbert von Berg. The book provides a detailed and comprehensive portrayal of the Vogtei and is considered a new standard work.
