- Abstract
Long term experiences with a gabion construction With the help of the presented investigations a comprehensive assessment of the corrosion behaviour of a gabion construction made of wires coated with a zinc-aluminium alloy after 20 years of service in dependence of different exposure conditions can be obtained. The mass loss of the zinc-aluminium coating was especially pronounced with respect to the different conditions at the sampling points. Gabion wires with direct soil contact revealed the lowest remaining metal coating. Atmospherically exposed wires as well those protected against direct soil contact by means of a fleece showed somewhat larger remaining metal coating. Around the circumference all wires revealed significantly varying layer thicknesses probably resulting from the production process. The investigations at the gabion construction have shown that the assumption of a mean linear corrosion rate of 1 μm/a is a realistic value under the given conditions. In local areas with direct soil contact this value can be considerably increased as soon as the aggressivity of the soil is increased. Formation of red rust was not detected at any of the investigated specimens.
