An essay is presented which examines the impact of internal displacement of refugees in the search for a lasting solution in the Georgia-Abkhazia conflict. It explores the dynamics by which forced migration and prolonged displacement work to establish mobilized populations, highlighting issues on ethnic cleansing. An overview of the prewar population of Abkhazia is discussed.
