- Abstract
Since its original formulation in the second half of the 19th century, the reference to the alleged primordial worship of the Great Mother Goddess has been increasingly taking hold among scholars, spreading, and gaining popularity both inside and outside academia. The early incorporation of this so-called «myth of the Goddess» into the feminist movement's imaginarium demonstrates this. The aim of this paper is to give an account of the development of the myth over time, while also exploring the reasons for its allure to some of the members of the feminist movement that ended in a whole process of «invention of tradition». Through a multidisciplinary literature review of the main versions of the myth, we analyze its most important functions as well as verify the early process of feminist resignification and (re)appropriation of the story as a kind of «inventive tradition».
