- Abstract
The article examines the history of French political relations with Africa in the 17th century using the example of West African ambassador Matteo Lopes to the court of French king Louis XIV. The conflict between the Dutch West Indian Company and the French government over trade rights in West Africa is examined, the role of Tezifon, king of Allada, Benin in the establishment of an embassy is analyzed, and the causes and consequences of differences of behavior expectations between Twezifon's and Louis' courts are discussed.
