This article provides summaries of four books related to various aspects of American history. "Gathering Strays" by Jim Hoy explores the stories of nineteenth-century Kansas cattle towns and introduces a diverse cast of historical characters. "The Plea" by Patricia L. Bryan and Thomas Wolf follows the life of Wesley Elkins, an Iowa boy convicted of murdering his parents, and examines the Progressive Era prison reform and changes in child psychology theory. "Sand Creek and the Tragic End of a Lifeway" by Louis Kraft delves into the history of the Sand Creek Massacre and its repercussions on the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. Lastly, "Mud, Blood, and Ghosts" by Julie Carr tells the story of Omer Madison Kem, a Populist politician, and explores the complexities of American history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
