- Title
The Reluctance of Women to Respond to Preterm Labor.
- Authors
Coleman Smith, Virginia
- Abstract
Preterm birth occurs before 37 weeks gestation and is associated with 75% of perinatal morbidity and mortality for infants born without anomalies. Preterm labor (PTL) symptoms include increased vaginal discharge, low back pain unrelated to activity, contractions, and low pelvic pressure. The earlier PTL symptoms are recognized and treated, the more likely the labor can be halted and normal growth of the fetus will continue. The purpose of this paper is to explore the reluctance of women to respond to the symptoms of preterm labor. The childbirth educator's expertise in relating to pregnant women and knowledge of early labor symptoms can have a major impact on assisting women how to recognize and respond appropriately.
