- Abstract
The article explores the role of Edward Staple Foxen Cooper in the preservation of the Imperial War Museum Film Archive between 1919 and 1934. The museum was established in 1917 and was considered as Great Britain's memorial to the sacrifice and effort represented by the Great War. Cooper was known as a Whitehall man of mystery among his contemporaries. He was born on April 16, 1872 and initially worked as a mechanical engineering draughtsman for the Fire Brigade Department of the London County Council in 1898. His career developed from fire-prevention concerns into general involvement in film matters. In 1920, he was appointed as part-time custodian to the museum's film collection. He was faced with the task of preserving an estimated 250,00 feet of film for posterity.
