- Title
HISTORY OF BENJY'S FENCE IN THE SOUND AND THE FURY.
- Authors
Perry, Edward Belk
- Abstract
In this article, the author details the history of the courthouse, and its surrounding iron fence, of Lafayette County, Mississippi, in order to explain the origins of the county courthouse and fence discussed in numerous works by author William Faulkner. The author begins by describing the county's early transportation and notes that the fence was likely cast iron and produced by the county's Jones McElwain Iron Foundry. The courthouse was burned during the U.S. Civil War and the fence moved to the house of lawyer William Thompson.
