- Abstract
The article examines the phenomenon of rural poverty from an intersectional perspective and emphasizes that women are particularly disadvantaged. Empirical results are presented that demonstrate the causes and effects of a reproduction crisis in rural areas. The authors argue that rural poverty-stricken individuals, especially working-class women, are neglected by toothless local social and labor market policies and are doubly exploited. The causes of rural poverty are complex and are related to social spatial peripheralization and structural changes. The financial situation of municipalities deteriorates due to deindustrialization and emigration, leading to a dependence on external funding. Social reproduction is jeopardized by the lack of livelihood opportunities and the absence of social infrastructure. Women from the rural working class are particularly affected. The structural devaluation of female labor leads to part-time employment, interruptions in work biographies, and an increased risk of old-age poverty. The current structural development and valorization strategies in rural regions contribute to further polarization of the social structure and exploit peripheralized poverty areas as exploitable resources.
