- Abstract
The article "Liberating ELA Classrooms: Nurturing an Abolitionist Praxis among Preservice Teachers of Color" discusses the need to address carcerality, particularly against youth of color, in English language arts (ELA) classrooms. The authors propose an abolitionist praxis, which involves eradicating carceral practices, policies, and ideologies in schools through reflection, theory, and action. They describe a community of abolitionist praxis that supports preservice teachers of color in developing and enacting this approach. The article provides an example of how engaging in collective discussions can help identify and counter carceral policies in schools. The authors emphasize the importance of continuing to explore possibilities for equity and justice in English education.
