By placing Muscovite integration of land and people within the framework of composite monarchies, this article will shed new light on both the extension of centralized political authority in Muscovy and the relationship between the tsar and his non-Russian subjects. The article will position Muscovite political developments as part of the general narrative of European history rather than as an exception to it.
