- Title
The Name of the Child: Cinema as Social Critique.
- Authors
Ehrlich, Linda C.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the depiction of the resiliency and fragility of childhood in the films "Salaam Bombay!" directed by Mira Nair, "Sansho the Bailiff," directed by Mizoguchi Kenji and "Goodbye, Children," directed by Louis Malle. These films emphasize the neo-realist child's point of view, mirroring society's shift between despair and hope during difficult times. The child protagonists in the movies pass to higher levels of maturity after contact with evil. Point of view shots show that these characters are drawn to the supernatural world and away from the human world they associate with pain.
