Ritual Brawls in John Ford's Films.
- Authors
Roth, Lane
- Abstract
The article explores how brawls between friendly characters are shown in the five films of John Ford. These films include "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," "The Quiet Man," "The Searchers," "The Wings of Eagles," and "Donovan's Reef." The author particularly points out three characteristics of brawls manifested in Ford's films which include its view as a secular ritual that promotes social cohesion, its involvement of communitas or a modality of social relatedness, and its aspect as an illustrator of culture versus chaos and of form against indeterminacy. In conclusion, the author notes how individuals and the society shown in Ford's films benefited from the way the brawl is depicted.
